Wired at midnight. Exhausted at noon. The weight that won't move. This is why.

You Used to Handle Everything.

You scheduled the meetings and packed the lunches and remembered everybody's doctor appointments, but now:

You wake up at 2 AM.

Your mind is racing.

You’re solving problems that don’t need to be solved at 2 AM.

And you cannot turn it off.

You are bone tired.

But you cannot rest.

You snap at someone you love over something small.

You feel the guilt immediately.

You wonder what is wrong with you.

Nothing is wrong with you.

But something is happening in your body that nobody has taken the time to explain.

You have heard the word cortisol.

Maybe you have seen it blamed for the belly weight that showed up out of nowhere.

Or the cravings that hit you at 10 PM.

Or the anxiety that feels like it has its own agenda.

Here is what I want you to understand:

Cortisol is not the villain.

Cortisol is the manager of your body’s emergency response system.

It is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The problem is that in perimenopause and menopause, the alarm never fully shuts off.

Because estrogen, the hormone that was quietly buffering your stress response your entire adult life, is declining.

You did not lose the ability to cope.

You lost the biological buffer that made coping possible.

And now you are running the same life.

The same job, the same family, the same pressure.

Inside a nervous system that is handling all of it differently than it used to.

That is not weakness.

That is biology.

And it is time someone explained it to you properly.

WHAT’S IN THE NEWS

Science Now Confirms What You’ve Been Feeling.

A 2025 peer-reviewed integrative review published in PMC examined how menopause disrupts the stress response system at the neurological level.

The findings are clear.

Estrogen is a key regulator of the HPA axis, which is the brain-body system that controls how you respond to stress.

When estrogen is adequate, it strengthens the feedback loop that tells your stress system to stand down.

When estrogen declines, that feedback loop weakens.

The result?

Women in perimenopause show amplified stress reactivity compared to their premenopausal selves.

The same stressor hits harder.

Recovery takes longer.

And the internal tools your body used to regulate all of it are no longer as available.

The researchers also confirmed that this same hormonal disruption affects serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

Which means the anxiety, the low mood, the irritability you are feeling is not just in your head.

It is a neurological response to a real hormonal change.

This is not a mental health diagnosis.

This is a biological transition that medicine has underexplained for far too long.

NEW EPISODE: Menopause Stories Podcast

This week’s episode is a solo one.

And it is one I have wanted to record for a long time.

Because every single week, someone asks me a version of the same question.

Is cortisol behind all of this?

The belly weight that won’t move no matter what you do.

The insomnia that has you wide awake at 2 AM with a racing mind.

The anxiety that showed up out of nowhere.

The brain fog.

The wired-but-tired feeling that makes no sense.

The cravings for sugar and carbs that hit hard and feel impossible to resist.

In this episode, I go all in.

I explain what cortisol is and why it is not the enemy.

I break down the HPA axis in plain English so it clicks.

I walk you through exactly how the drop in estrogen makes your stress response more reactive.

I explain why cutting your calories further and adding more HIIT workouts is making things worse, not better.

And I give you five specific things you can do right now that will move the needle.

This episode is for you if you have tried harder and gotten nowhere.

This episode is for you if your labs say normal but you feel anything but.

This episode is for you if you are exhausted in a way that sleep does not fix.

You cannot out-discipline a cortisol problem.

But you can understand it.

And understanding it changes everything.
