The aches, the slow recovery, the fatigue. There is a name for this now.

You used to bounce back.

Hard workout Monday, back at it by Wednesday.

Tough week, one good night of sleep, and you were fine.

Now it takes longer.

Your shoulder aches and you cannot explain it.

Your recovery is slower than it used to be.

You wake up tired even when you slept.

And at some point you stopped asking questions about it.

You just said: I think I am getting older.

Maybe.

But I want you to consider something else.

Dr. Aleksandra Gajer is a physician who trained in emergency medicine.

She now runs her own practice focused on metabolic health, hormone health, and longevity.

She is 44 years old. She works in this field. She talks to women about these symptoms every single day.

And she still almost missed it in herself.

She had a history of Lyme disease.

So when the muscle aches came, when the recovery slowed, when upper body training started taking a toll it never used to, she did what most of us do.

She pointed to the most recent past thing she could blame.

It took a colleague looking at her from the outside to say: this might be your estrogen.

She started a low-dose estrogen patch.

The muscle aches cleared. The recovery improved.

She called it miraculous.

And she works in this space every day.

If she almost missed it, you are allowed to have missed it too.

WHAT'S IN THE NEWS

In October 2024, researchers published a clinical review in the journal Climacteric, the official journal of the International Menopause Society.

They gave a name to something that has been happening to women for decades without anyone calling it what it is.

They called it the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause.

Joint pain. Muscle loss. Stiffness. Slower recovery. Fatigue that does not lift.

Researchers estimate this affects up to 70% of women going through perimenopause and menopause.

For nearly one in four, it is debilitating enough to affect daily function.

Most women never connect it to estrogen.

Because we were taught estrogen is about reproduction.

What the research is now making clear is that estrogen also supports your muscles, your joints, your tendons, and your ability to recover from physical effort.

When estrogen drops, the body can experience joint pain, loss of muscle mass, loss of bone density, and longer recovery times.

That shoulder that will not stop aching?

That longer recovery time?

That fatigue you cannot explain?

This is information.

Not failure.

This Week on the Podcast

I sat down with Dr. Aleksandra Gajer this week.

Emergency medicine physician. Now the owner of The Gajer Practice in Northern Virginia, where she works with patients on metabolic health, hormones, peptide therapies, and longevity care.

We talked about what she sees every single day.

Women carrying more than anyone should have to carry, who have been told that what they are feeling is just aging, who are too depleted to even start the habits that would help them.

She said something I want you to hear.

“Some women feel like they need to earn the right to ask for help.”

Like they should already be sleeping eight hours, eating perfectly, and strength training before they walk through the door.

She said that is one of the most damaging things medicine has done to women.

You do not need to have it all together before you get support.

You come in as you are.

That is the whole point.

She also talked about what happens when exhaustion is so deep that a woman cannot get to the action steps.

How that is not a willpower problem.

It is a biology problem. And it has real solutions.

After you listen, reply and tell me this.

What symptom have you been chalking up to stress, or age, or a busy season, that might deserve a closer look?

YOUR NEXT STEP

You are not slowing down because you are weak.

You are not failing because your body needs more than it used to.

You are a woman in a hormonal transition that most of medicine still does not have the language for.

That is worth taking seriously.

If you are in Texas, Iowa, Illinois, Georgia, or Michigan, I have a complimentary 45-minute virtual consult available for you.

We will talk through what you are experiencing and whether hormone therapy or another approach makes sense for you.
