You have been addressing the surface. What if we looked underneath it?
Nobody told you estrogen was running your skin.
Not your dermatologist.
Not your aesthetician.
Not the woman behind the counter who sold you the $200 serum.
Nobody said: by the time you hit 40, you will have already lost 30% of your collagen. Not because you skipped sunscreen or drank too much wine in your 30s. Because estrogen started leaving. Quietly. Without announcement. Years before you noticed anything in the mirror.
So you did what any smart woman does.
You bought better products.
You booked the facial.
You tried the laser.
You stayed consistent.
And you still stood in your bathroom one morning looking at your reflection thinking: why does my face look like it aged 5 years in the last 18 months?
That is not a skincare problem.
That is a hormone problem wearing a skincare problem’s clothes.
Estrogen is what tells your body to keep making collagen.
Estrogen is what keeps your skin hydrated at the tissue level, not the surface level.
Estrogen is what holds the structure of your face together, the bone, the muscle, the fat that gives you that fullness.
When it starts declining, all of that starts declining with it.
No serum replaces it.
No facial reverses it.
No laser gets to the root of it.
And the most expensive treatments in the world will give you underwhelming results if the hormonal foundation underneath them is crumbling.
I brought a dermatologist on the podcast this week to say exactly that.
Dr. Sarolta Szabo has been practicing dermatology for over 20 years. She runs a full aesthetic and medical dermatology practice in Colorado. And a few years ago she started weaving wellness into everything she does because she kept watching the same thing happen.
Women would come in.
She would do excellent work.
The results would be disappointing.
Not because of her skill.
Because nobody had addressed what was happening below the surface.
She said something in our conversation I want you to sit with.
“I cannot fix the skin without fixing everything.”
That is the whole episode right there.
WHAT’S IN THE NEWS
The research just confirmed what your mirror has been trying to tell you.
A peer-reviewed review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in August 2025 examined exactly how menopause dismantles skin quality and what hormone replacement therapy does about it.
Here is what the researchers found.
The drop in estrogen during menopause directly causes decreased collagen production, reduced elasticity, and moisture loss.
Collagen declines 2% per year after menopause if nothing addresses it.
These changes have a measurable impact on self-esteem, psychological wellbeing, and quality of life.
They also found that hormone replacement therapy shows real evidence of improving skin elasticity, thickness, and collagen production.
And that minimally invasive aesthetic treatments deliver significantly better results when the hormonal foundation is addressed first.
The laser works better when estrogen is supported.
The injectable works better when muscle and bone are not depleted.
The serum works better when your body has what it needs to produce collagen on its own.
The skin is downstream.
The hormones are the source.
NEW EPISODE: Menopause Stories Podcast
Download this one and save it.
Dr. Sarolta Szabo has spent 20 years watching women spend real money on treatments that should work and walk away underwhelmed.
She finally figured out why.
And in this episode she says it out loud, all of it.
We cover:
Why you lose 30% of your collagen before menopause officially starts, and why most women have no idea.
Why the bones and muscles in your face are the scaffolding your skin hangs on, and what happens when they start to go.
Why women on GLP-1s need to be especially intentional about protein and muscle to avoid looking hollowed.
What topical estrogen on the face does, why it is safe even if you are on systemic HRT, and why your dermatologist may not have mentioned it.
What adaptogens are and how plant-based estrogen mimics can work for women who want a non-hormonal option.
What procedures like Sculptra, microneedling with radiofrequency, and ultrasound collagen stimulation are doing under the skin and why the settings matter more than most people realize.
Dr. Szabo also shared her own story. A ski injury in 2018 that snapped her bone instead of her ligament. A bone density scan that revealed low-grade osteoporosis in her 40s. And the slow realization that her hormones had quietly bottomed out while everyone around her missed it.
The dermatologist did not know until she went looking for herself.
If that does not tell you everything about how underserved women are in this space, I do not know what does.
This episode is for you if your skin has changed and nobody has given you a real answer.
This episode is for you if your treatments are not delivering what they promised.
This episode is for you if you are done being told to buy a better moisturizer.

Truly Balanced Wellness Care
P.S.
You have labs sitting somewhere. Maybe on your phone. Maybe in a patient portal you have not logged into in 6 months.
You looked at the numbers. The doctor said normal. And you left with no idea what any of it meant for your skin, your sleep, your weight, your life.
The Hormone Manifesto is a 60-minute self-paced video course for $97.
It teaches you how to read your menopause labs in plain language so the next time you are sitting across from a doctor, you know exactly what to ask for.
Your skin is telling you something.
Your labs will confirm it.
You deserve to know what you are looking at.
Sixty minutes. $97. And you stop leaving that office with more questions than answers.
